What exactly is a bad beat?

Bad beat is a poker term for a hand in which a player who had what appeared to be the strongest hand loses. It most often occurs where one player bets the clearly stronger hand and their opponent makes a poor call that eventually "hits" and wins.

How do I win a bad beat jackpot?

There are different requirements in different poker rooms how strong a losing hand must be to qualify for the jackpot. However, normally the losing hand requires to be four-of-a-kind or better. How are the bad beat winnings shared?

This differs from poker room to poker room, but the most common split is:
- 20% is used to seed the next Jackpot
- 10% is used for administration
- 70% is distributed as winnings
- 50% to the losing hand "The Bad Beat"
- 25% to the winner of the hand
- 25% evenly split between the other Players who participated in the hand

Does it cost anything extra to play bad beat jackpot games?

Yes, a small rake is being taken out of each pot to fund the jackpot (in addition to the regular rake). The rake varies but normally is $0,5 to $1.
